Symphonic Band - Melissa Wood, Director

A symphonic band, also called wind band, concert band, symphonic winds, wind orchestra, wind symphony, or wind ensemble, is a performing ensemble consisting of several members of the woodwind instrument family, brass instrument family and percussion instrument family.

Its various repertoire include original wind compositions, arranged classical items, light music, and popular tunes. Though the instrumentation is similar, it is distinguished from the marching band in that its primary function is as a concert ensemble. The repertoire for a concert band may, however, contain marches. A Wind Ensemble usually has one musician per part while concert band doubles parts.

Notes from Mrs. Wood
Hello my band children. I hope you are all having a restful summer and getting to sleep in late and stay up to the wee hours of morning. Well, in less than 1 month, yes, that’s right, 1 month, we start SUMMER BAND! I know, I can hear you all cheering. For some of you this time of the year brings great excitement, for some of you, you have no idea what is in store. Well, let me tell you, this is my most favorite part of the year. We all get a great tan, we get to sweat, smell, make a LOT of new friends, and have a GREAT time learning our new show for the year.

As you can tell I am back and ready to hit the pavement, AKA Band Practice Field, and get this party started.

For those of you I have not met, I look forward to getting to know you. And for those of you who are my returning children, I can’t wait to get started.

Enjoy these last few weeks of summer, and I will see you at Pay Night (July 21 – 24; 5:30pm – 8:30pm).

Symphonic Band - Practice Tools
Performance Exam Guide - This will tell you how and what to practice so you are not always playing the same "mistake" over and over again. As always please check with your director as to what you should be practicing. If you try to follow this formula, practice time will go by so much faster and be more enjoyable for you…..1. work on something new for a while; 2. then pull out something you enjoy playing; 3. go back to something new or something that needs work; and then finally, 4. end with something you like.
Practice Form - This form is to be completed weekly and turned in on Fridays to Mrs. Wood. You will be given one form at the beginning of the class on Fridays, if you misplace it or are not in class that day, you can easily print one off from home and fill it out. As always, Parent Verification is one of the requirements for receiving full credit for your practice sheet. The number of minutes needed for the grade you want are also listed, so it will be easy for you to figure out what grade you will receive.
Web Metronome - The WebMetronome is a free, online metronome.

Effective Practice Guide - Performance Exam Rubric - This will tell you the various ways you are being given a grade for your playing / performance exams that we use for chair tests, pass-offs
(concert season), and auditions for next year.
